Inside the Meta Partnership with Midjourney and the Future of AI Creativity

Inside Meta’s Latest Play to Compete in the AI Image and Video Race

Before we dive into what, why and how. Let’s first unfold the types of AI tools, if I had to classify AI tools I’d classify them into 3 types- 1) Standalone AI Tools 2) Tools with Integrated AI 3) Custom AI Solutions. Standalone AI tools are those that work on their own and do not need any outside larger platform. Examples would be ChatGPT, Gemini, Midjourney. Midjourney (before this Meta deal) was a classic standalone AI tool. Now, coming to tools integrated with AI- these are those tools which have AI embedded in their platform. Examples of the same would be Gmail’s “help me write” tool, Microsoft’s co-pilot. Lastly, coming to Custom AI solutions, these basically are tailored systems built for specific companies, industries or workflows. An example for the same would be a bank deploying a custom AI model to detect suspicious transactions.

So, Where exactly does Meta + Midjourney Partnership Fit?

Meta’s licensing Midjourney’s technology is not about creating a standalone tool. Because Midjourney has already covered that and is a standalone tool by itself. Instead, this move helps Meta:

    • Integrate AI into its platforms such as Instagram, Facebook, Messenger.
    • Potentially build custom AI solutions for creative tools within its apps.

So, through this move Meta is integrating Midjourney’s AI tools with a hint of custom AI solutions since Meta will adapt Midjourney’s models to its ecosystem and products.

Now, let’s dive into this well-thought partnership, what it means and why it matters. Midjourney is a fast-raising which is popularly known for its distinctive AI-generated images and, more recently for its videos. And the partnership with Midjourney was announced by Meta’s Chief AI Officer, Alexandr Wang, in a post on Threads. Wang further said that the researchers of Meta will be working closely with the team at Midjourney to bring their AI ecosystem into Meta. The strategy behind the same is to have “all-of-the-above approach”, in which Meta would be able to successfully combine world-class talent, ambitious compute, and partnerships with leading players in the field(like this one).

    Why Meta Needs Midjourney

At the present Midjourney has established a mark in the AI landscape. It started with no outside funding, built a subscription model and generated $200 million in revenue within just one year of starting. Slowly, it expanded into video with its V1 model. Which made it one of the few independent labs that was pushing the boundaries of both image and video generation. How this helps Meta is, this partnership is providing it a platform which is widely known for its artistic capabilities and it’ll offer a shortcut to match or even surpass rivals in the AI race be it OpenAI’s Sora or Google’s Veo.

    Meta’s Expanding AI Strategy

If you think partnering with Midjourney is Meta’s first phase of expanding its ecosystem, you’re wrong because over the past year Meta has scaled up aggressively in terms of its AI ambitions:

    • Talent spree: In order to lure the top and best AI researches CEO Mark Zuckerberg has offered blockbuster compensation packages, which sometimes have exceeded $100 million.
    • Heavy investments: Meta has poured over $10 billion into Scale AI, the same is to primarily increase its data labeling and model training capabilities.
    • Acquisitions: If you don’t know this, recently Meta snapped up an AI platform called Play AI. Which is a focused startup, the goal behind this? To diversify its model offerings.
    • Bigger conversations: Reports have been surfacing that talk about how Zuckerberg has been considering forming AI alliances. Furthermore, there were rumors of a chat with Elon Musk about joining his $97 billion bid for OpenAI (a deal Meta ultimately walked away from).

In other words, Meta’s strategy of partnering with Midjourney is just another puzzle piece, that’s helping it achieve something big.

While this is a big move, there’s still some controversy behind it. Because just 2 months ago, Midjourney was hit with a lawsuit from Disney and Universal, alleging that the startup trained its model to use the copyrighted works without any permission. Additionally Meta is no stranger to “fair use” as Meta Faces French Lawsuit Over AI Training with Copyrighted Content. Thus, with this move by partnering with Midjourney, Meta will inherit not just the startup’s creative firepower but also its legal risks.

What This Means for the AI Race

This partnership highlights 2 major things:

    1. Speed matters: AI field is blooming and growing so fast. And Meta is racing up to catch up with Google and OpenAI. Both of them are continuously redefining user expectations for content that AI generates.
    2. Partnerships are the new battleground: Meta is playing it smart. Instead of building every model in-house which is going to take up a lot of resources, it is willing to team up with innovators like Midjourney to just accelerate its progress.

This partnership is going to be beneficial even for Midjourney. It is going to provide it access to Meta’s compute resources and distribution channels. Furthermore, while maintaining its independence. As CEO David Holz emphasized, the company remains investor-free and self-sustaining.
