Grok is not actually killing its AI companions. It is removing them from the Grok app itself.
The companions like Ani and Rudi as well as the other 3D characters are departing from the Companions section of Grok. Their counterparts or similar characters will move on to Animates. Which is another app owned by Animation Inc, the same company that made the avatar technology.
xAI refers to the companion mode as an “experiment” and maintains that Grok must return to prioritizing its key functionalities. This leads us to the question of where these characters will move to, who designed the new application, and what happened to the time necessary to construct the connection with Ani.

What happened to Grok’s AI companions?
On the 24th of July, 2026, xAI announced its decision to discontinue the 3D companion avatars feature. The avatars part of this feature are Ani, Mika, Rudi and Valentine.
This deactivation is not a one-time event but is happening in phases. Reportedly, users expect the entire companions tab to disappear from Grok in a matter of few weeks or months.
Nevertheless, amidst all the chaos linked to the discontinuation of the 3D avatars, one crucial fact is getting neglected. Your chat history, settings related to the personality of the assistant as well as affection status will continue to be available after deletion. Why did xAI build Ani, Rudi and the other companions in the first place?
Grok did not merely provide answers to questions. In July 2025, the company xAI introduced Ani, the first character endowed with speech, physical appearance, and a personality.
In October 2025, Mika appeared on the scene. Valentine, the next character, took on a romantic persona. After Mika, Rudi and Bad Rudi arrived as a red panda character while in the early part of 2026 xAI introduced Kai.
The company was keen on finding out if people would respond to an AI character that had a body and a personality instead of being merely a series of messages on a computer screen.

What is xAI’s official reason for retiring companions?
This was partially the case and only for a brief time- companions were only available on iOS in July 2025. And according to xAI, there were no intentions to launch the app for Android or the web.
However, this changed in April 2026 when the companion mode was available on Android soon after. Which effectively meant that by July 2026, the issue of limitations of various platforms had become far less significant.
Why did the companions move to the Animates app instead of just disappearing?
If the characters were not worth keeping, xAI could have deleted them without any hesitation. But instead, a different app came out with the same style of animation within just a few weeks since the announcement about the shutdown.
Animation Inc, the company that actually created the 3D avatars used in Grok, released the Animates app in late August 2026. There is no mention of equity ties between xAI and Animation Inc, although the graphical connection is obvious.
We can assume that xAI does not oppose AI companions as such but probably just does not want them to dictate what Grok is about.
Grok wants to be a general-purpose assistant. While Animates is focused on companionship, memories, and presence. These are two different products with different economics. And separating them allows each one to succeed without overlapping on the same road map.
What exactly is the Animates app?
Animates was launched on Android followed by its release on Apple. The app is designed for real-time voice communication and real-time memory retention across different sessions.
Similarly, the app limits access for users of a particular age. The App Store listing has a report regarding three different subscription options available in the app.
The pricing strategy for the middle tier is lower than that of the companion app by SuperGrok. Hence, this pricing strategy is advantageous compared to the companions used in Grok.

Does your Ani or Rudi chat history transfer to Animates?
No, Animates uses its own separate accounts and does not link logins from Grok to Animates.
Your conversation history, memory, and level of affection with your Grok companion will not be shared by Animates. Reports are mixed concerning whether an Ani character has been part of Animates since its launch. Or was introduced within days after its first ever release but, even if a character appears in the app, it will still be brand new.
This is the point that will likely come to users as a shock. They are not getting an app update. They are getting an opportunity to start their experience with a character they know and love. Was Grok Companions actually a platform problem?
Partially and temporarily. The companions were made available on iOS only in July 2025 and xAI claims that there was no roadmap for Android or web platforms.
The shift came in April 2026, when xAI finally released Companion Mode on Android. By the time xAI announced its discontinuation in July 2026, Android had already closed much of the platform gap.
Thus, the platform restrictions were the cause of complications in the early stages, but they alone could not explain the decision to discontinue the feature several months after it became available for Android. Did xAI’s legal troubles play a role in the shutdown?
At this point, caution is key. xAI is locked in litigation against Minnesota’s AI nudification law. Which came into force on August 1, 2026 after a judicial decision against blocking the law.
Among other lawsuits on the matter is a class-action by several minors accusing Grok Imagine. A platform created by xAI, of being responsible for images depicting minors in sexual contexts. xAI claims to have suspended tens of thousands of accounts and reported multiple cases to child protection bodies.
At this point, we should be specific. The lawsuits refer to the Grok Imagine tool, but not to the 3D chatting feature as such. There is no public knowledge to prove that the shutdown of the 3D tool was due to this lawsuit.
What can be said fairly is that xAI is in an unusual legal and regulatory background regarding AI sexual content. Separation of an erotic and personality-driven feature from the main Grok brand is a way to minimize risks in that environment even without direct proof of the link between two things.
Is Grok actually killing Ani?
Not exactly. xAI is killing the Grok edition of the companion experience, not just the characters.
