    AI vs human intelligence & who really holds the upper hand?

This is not just a single incident. The number of such cases is increasing rapidly. This brings a pertinent question to mind. “Can Artificial Intelligence (AI) ever realize the intricacies of human understanding?” The answer to this question cannot be a simple yes or no. It requires a deep thought into the powers and limitations of AI at the moment and how it is supposed to grow over the years.

    The question is not whether intelligent machines can have any emotions, but whether machines can be intelligent without any emotions.”, thus remarked Marvin Minsky, co-founder of MIT’s AI Laboratory

    Artificial Intelligence (AI) has seen unexpected growth in recent years. As AI continues to grow and progress, many questions arise about its capacity to surpass human intelligence and its ability to make fair, impartial decisions.

    This article explores if AI achieves an understanding like humans, could surpass human intelligence as well, make fair, unbiased decisions for individuals or society as a whole and what seems the road ahead.

    The current state of AI: A world-bending power, but still limited

    Machines can identify patterns within massive data sets, providing valuable insights that humans might miss. Yet, when it comes to tasks requiring true creativity, emotional intelligence, or complex reasoning, AI falls short. As Xaq Pitkow, an associate professor at Carnegie Mellon University, points out, “The brain has a lot of deep neurological structures related to different functions and tasks like memory, values, movement patterns, sensory perception, and more.” These structures enable us to engage in different kinds of thinking that give us a cognitive edge over AI.

    AI algorithms, while powerful, are essentially prediction machines. They analyze large amounts of data, looking for patterns and making educated guesses about what will happen next. Human cognition, however, incorporates flexibility, abstract thinking, and creativity—traits that AI has not yet replicated. For example, while AI can predict weather patterns with high accuracy, it cannot easily conceptualize new, abstract solutions to unforeseen problems or adapt its thinking to radically different scenarios.

    AI vs human intelligence in the fields of arts and creativity

    AI’s prowess is often put to the test in creative fields, where it must demonstrate more than just pattern recognition. Take the example of humour: Can AI make a better joke than a human comedian? The answer, for now, is a resounding no. While AI can certainly generate jokes, it often lacks the nuance, timing, and cultural context that make a human-crafted joke effective. While AI can generate music or even suggest recipes based on a large database of ingredients and techniques, it does not possess the instinct, cultural understanding, or emotional connection that a talented musician or chef has honed over years of practice.

    Consider chefs and comedians—both professions require a blend of instinct, creativity, and emotional intelligence. Comedians, for instance, develop their craft over time through trial and error, learning how to read an audience and adapt their performance. Chefs, similarly, combine technical expertise with a deep understanding of flavours, textures, and presentation, and their craft is often influenced by personal experience and intuition. AI may be able to mimic aspects of these professions, but it lacks the depth of human understanding that leads to genuine creativity.

    Can AI navigate ethical dilemmas?

    AI’s inability to understand the nuances of human ethics is another area where it falls behind the human mind. Consider the task of apologizing to someone you have offended. This social skill requires empathy, an understanding of the other person’s feelings, and a nuanced approach to mending a relationship. AI, however, lacks the emotional awareness and social context necessary to navigate such situations effectively. Similarly, when faced with a complex moral conundrum, AI may provide a solution based on predefined algorithms and data but cannot weigh the full spectrum of human experience or empathy in its decision-making process.

    The flexibility of human intelligence and how it stands apart from AI

    What sets the human mind apart from AI is its ability to think across multiple domains at the same time. The brain’s complex structures built for engaging in cognitive tasks right from abstract reasoning and creativity to provide emotional intelligence and social interaction. AI, by contrast, excels only in narrow domains, such as predicting trends or solving well-defined problems. While AI can mimic certain aspects of human cognition, it lacks the holistic approach that defines human intelligence.

    Furthermore, the AI algorithms that dominate the market are highly task-specific. They can process vast amounts of data and make predictions. However, they cannot replicate the full breadth of human experience and understanding. AI has the power to change many areas of life, showing it can do some tasks better than humans. But it still can’t match the way our brains work in all areas. While AI is becoming more involved in making decisions, it’s important to make sure these decisions are fair and unbiased. The future of AI should focus on creating systems that are not only smart but also ethical. Thus, they must encourage progress while keeping society’s best interests in mind.

    AI can help us in many ways, but we must think carefully about how it affects people. By balancing new technology with responsibility, we can make sure AI benefits everyone fairly and positively.
