In a significant development to bolster India’s standing globally in artificial intelligence (AI), Aravind Srinivas, CEO of Perplexity AI, has decided to personally pump in $1 million. He also commits five hours each week to mentoring and guiding a dedicated team. Which aims to achieve greater AI expertise in India.
A Vision for India’s AI Excellence
With respect to Indian advancements in Artificial Intelligence, Srinivas has promised at the level of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO). He signifies the importance of developing indigenous AI models, stating that India should not solely rely on existing frameworks. But, should also cultivate its own model training expertise. He feels that is how India can truly become a force in the AI landscape.

He argues with as much respect as could be possible with the views of the eminent figure like IIT grads about Infosys co-founder Nandan Nilekani advocating building applications with existing AI models. In his opinion, it is important not just to build applications, but also to learn how to train models. He opines that was the only way the innovation and self-reliance will come from.
Encouraging Excellence
In addition to all of this, Anandan has also thrown in another $10 million to the prize for the best Indian set of AI matched against the Chinese AI reasoning module. The Chinese reasoning module is DeepSeek R1. DeepSeek R1 is best known as the reasoning model that caters to logic inference, mathematics problem solving, and real-time decision making. Therefore, achieving better than this for India will definitely be an extraordinary leap in AI research for the country.
