Meta Platforms is strategically acquiring the South Korean AI chip startup FuriosaAI. Which, if successful, would endow the company with its own artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructures and reduce dependence on external GPU providers.
FuriosaAI: A Rising Star in AI Hardware
Founded in 2017 by former engineers from Samsung and AMD, FuriosaAI has emerged as an important player in AI semiconductor systems in a relatively short time. The company specializes in developing high-performance AI accelerators. And its latest chip, RNGD (pronounced ‘Renegade’), is designed to perform efficient inference in data centers. Especially for large language models and multimodal AI workloads.
Meta’s Strategic Intent
Meta’s interest in FuriosaAI fits its larger view of consolidating its own AI hardware capabilities. With the integration of FuriosaAI’s technology, Meta would be able to optimally implement its AI endeavors with lower reliance on outsiders. For instance from Nvidia for GPU supplies.
